The Jamaican Bar Association is urging Prime Minister Andrew Holness to fully appoint Justice Bryan Sykes to the post of Chief Justice.
Prime Minister Holness says he’s confident Justice Sykes will assume the role fully, but he first needs to prove himself.
The statement has sparked outrage among members of the legal fraternity.
President of the Jamaica Bar Association, Jacqueline Cummings Gordon, says she’s writing to Mr. Holness expressing those concerns.
She says the attorneys are very concerned about the senior jurist’s appointment to only act in the position of Chief Justice.
But Mrs. Cummings Gordon says they’re more concerned about the Prime Minister’s statement that ‘actions that bring results will determine if Justice Sykes is confirmed in the post’.
Prominent Attorney Lloyd McFarlane has called the Prime Minister’s decision madness and says it’s unconstitutional.
Mrs Cummings Gordon refused to comment on the constitutionality of the appointment. She, however, commended the Prime Minister for selecting Justice Sykes.
