Belize, Guatemala In Border Dispute

Tensions are again rising between Belize and its neighbour Guatemala.

Guatemala has had a centuries old territorial claim over Belize.

Last weekend, a group of about 2-hundred Belizeans, calling themselves the Territorial Volunteers, staged an excursion to Sarstoon Island, at the country’s southern-most point.

However, they were intercepted by the Guatemalan navy, who claimed the volunteers had strayed into Guatemalan territory.

The Guatemalans also accosted a team from the Organization of American States, who were there to observe the trip.

Belizean Prime Minister Dean Barrow is describing the incident as an armed military incursion into his country.
