South West St. Andrew Member of Parliament, the PNP’s Dr. Angela Brown Burke says she’ll be leading street protests if a State of Public Emergency is declared in the area.
Dr. Brown Burke addressed the House of Representatives yesterday and lamented the high crime rate in the St. Andrew South Police Division. That division includes some crime affected areas of Dr. Brown Burke’s constituency such as Payne Land and sections of Maxfield Avenue. But, Dr. Brown Burke says she’ll resist any move to implement a State of Public Emergency in the area.
She says what the St. Andrew South Police Division requires is social intervention and investments.
Dr. Brown Burke’s comments have come despite Police reports of a more than 250-percent increase in murders in the St. Andrew South Police Division.
Police statistics show that as of April 7 this year 55-murders have been committed in the St. Andrew South Police Division.
This compared to 16 murders which were committed for a similar period last year.
Former National Security Minister, Peter Bunting also lamented the increase during his address to the House of Representatives yesterday.
Both Mr. Bunting and Dr. Brown Burke were speaking during debate on a resolution to extend Zones of Special Operations in Mount Salem in St. James and Denham Town in Kingston.
