Central Manchester Member of Parliament, the PNP’s Peter Bunting, is insisting that he’s not insensitive to the need to save lives.
On Tuesday, Mr. Bunting was the only MP to vote against a resolution to extend the state of public emergency in Western Jamaica.
Mr. Bunting says he’s taken a stance in support of the rule of law.
The state of public emergency in St. James last year contributed to a 70-percent decrease in murders in the parish.
There’s been an 80-percent spike in murders in St. James since January this year when the Opposition voted against a further extension of the measure.
Mr. Bunting says he’s aware that his vote may be viewed by some as a holier than thou approach.
The Central Manchester MP was speaking in the House of Representatives earlier this week.
He called for lawmakers to amend the constitution if they wish to extend the current state of public emergency in western Jamaica.
