The Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Dr Horace Chang, is on a working visit to China this week.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister says he’s held a series of discussions with officials and potential investors there.
So far, he’s had consultations with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC); Jiuquan Iron & Steel Company (JISCO), who operate the ALPART bauxite plant in St. Elizabeth; and the Chinese Exim Bank.
During the meeting with officials of JISCO and COSCO Shipping Lines, Dr. Chang was reportedly updated on the company’s progress at the ALPART plant.
He was also briefed on plans for further expansion and collaboration.
JISCO also told the Minister about plans to use LNG as a fuel source for its alumina works, as well as building a new power plant to process alumina.
This will eventually see the plant producing nearly 5-million tonnes of alumina annually.
Dr. Chang and his team return to the island on Saturday.
