Security Minister Points to Social Intervention As Fix For Jamaica’s Crime Woes

National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, says there’s a need to transform communities to address the nation’s crime problem.

Dr Chang says even contractors are afraid to enter some of the crime-plagued, depressed communities.

He says personal safety is significant to transformation.

Dr. Chang says social intervention must not only be transformative but sustainable.

It’s why he says the government is taking an institutional approach, going into communities and addressing social needs such as water, housing and land titles.

The National Security Minister is also blaming poor urban planning for some of the nation’s crime problems.

He was delivering the keynote address to celebrate the Police Station Expansion Program.

The program is sponsored by the European Union in collaboration with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund, JSIF.
