Veteran Member of Parliament for North West St. Andrew, the JLP’s Derrick Smith says he will be resigning shortly.
Mr. Smith made the announcement during a meeting of his constituency executive last night. He didn’t give a specific timeline. But Mr. Smith said he’d shortly be formally advising Prime Minister Andrew Holness and House Speaker, Pearnel Charles of his intention to resign.
Mr. Smith is also the Leader of Government Business in the lower house and Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, OPM. He’s been battling serious illness over the past few years.
Mr. Smith has been Member of Parliament for North West St. Andrew for 29 years.His son, Duane Smith, this morning tweeted that he sat in the meeting while Mr. Smith made the announcement.
Duane, who’s the Councillor for the Chancery Hall Division in North West St. Andrew, said he was emotional and proud of his father.
Duane Smith recently declared his interest in succeeding his father as MP for the constituency.
