Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck, says there will be certainty in the sentence to be handed down when an accused takes advantage of provisions under the recently passed plea bargaining legislation.
The law encourages accused to plead guilty thus benefiting from a reduced sentence.
The Justice Minister says the uncertainty regarding the sentence to be handed down was one of the reasons why a recent ‘sentence discount day’ in May saw only 12 accused pleading guilty.
The discount day was a pilot project in the Home Circuit Court and the Home Circuit section of the Gun Court where accused persons would qualify for a reduction in their sentence if they pleaded guilty.
Delroy Chuck was speaking on Ask the OPM on Cliff Hughes Online on Tuesday.
