Education Regulations to be Revised to Outlaw Corporal Punishment

Education Minister, Ruel Reid, says education regulations will be revised to comply with the directive of Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, to outlaw corporal punishment in schools.

The ban on corporal punishment was announced by Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, during his Budget Debate contribution on Tuesday.

Minister Reid says it must be made clear in the regulations that corporal punishment isn’t allowable.

Minister Reid says while the regulations are being revised teachers are discouraged from using corporal punishment in schools.

He says despite not being covered in current regulations teachers may open themselves up to legal liability.
