Former Director of Elections, Orrette Fisher, is suggesting that the Electoral Office of Jamaica, EOJ, play a greater role in a future National Identification System, NIDS.
Mr. Fisher says the EOJ already has a very large database of Jamaicans registered, including demographic and biometric data.
He says they could work together with the Registrar General’s Department, RGD, to capture those not yet in the system.
Mr. Fisher says the EOJ has been collecting fingerprints for voter ID cards since 1997.
He says the skill set is available locally to do so for NIDS, and properly manage the database in a confidential way.
And, he says using the EOJ would reduce duplication of effort.
