Godfrey Stewart High Mourns Young Stand-Out

The Godfrey Stewart High School in Westmoreland was plunged into mourning yesterday following the shooting death of a grade 11 student.

Dead is 18-year-old Stefan ‘Ricko’ Beckford. Stefan lived in the troubled community of Russia in Savanna-la-Mar in the parish.

Reports are that Beckford and his mother were at home on Saturday evening when gunmen invaded their home and shot both of them. His mother was admitted to hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

The school’s Vice-Principal, Emily Lawrence Ricketts, says Stefan was well-known and loved by the school community.

Mrs. Lawrence Ricketts is calling for an end to the violence which hasn’t spared the nation’s children.

A trauma team was sent to the school yesterday. The number of children murdered since the start of 2018 has almost doubled when compared to the corresponding period for last year.

Recently released police statistics have revealed that 13 children were killed up to April 7 this year when compared to the 7 who were murdered over the same period last year.
