Govt & Security Considering Post-SOE Crime-Fighting Strategies

The government and the security forces are already considering alternative crime-fighting strategies to be implemented following the end of the States of Public Emergency in January.

That’s according to National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang. This disclosure comes after the move to extend the enhanced security measures across the island collapsed in the House of Representatives last evening.

The Opposition PNP dropped their support of the initiative depriving the government of the needed two-thirds majority to pass it.

The move to end all three SOEs has left the nation in shock with many expressing disappointment in the Opposition’s decision to vote against a three-month extension.

Others are now in fear of what will happen once the security forces are withdrawn from their area at the start of the new year.

Dr. Chang explained that the move to extend the SOEs was being done based on an assessment of the progress made in the areas affected.

Dr. Chang who admits the SOEs could not be the long-term response to crime, says more time was needed using the enhanced security measures to address the issue and rebuild the security infrastructure.
