Gov’t Wants Online Spying Proof

The Simpson Miller administration says it’s taking seriously a claim by the US Government that it has been unlawfully monitoring the private online communication of Jamaicans.

The claim was contained in the US State Department’s latest Human Rights Country report.

Information Minister, Senator Sandrea Falconer says the Simpson Miller administration will be submitting a formal request to the US State Department for information to support its claim.

The US state department said it had received what it described as credible reports implicating the Jamaican Government in monitoring private online communication without the appropriate legal authority.

But addressing today’s Jamaica House media briefing, Senator Falconer suggested that the claim may have been informed by anecdotal or unreliable reports.

When pressed, Senator Falconer appeared to resile from her suggestion that the claim by the US State Department may have been informed by anecdotal reports.
