Guyana To Crack Down on Work Permits Issued to Foreigners

The Government in Guyana says it will be cracking down on the number of work permits issued to foreigners for jobs that Guyanese can do.

The country’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Winston Felix, says hundreds of Brazilians are being brought into Guyana to take up various posts.

During his contribution to the Budget debate yesterday, Minister Felix says that of the 3-hundred permits issued so far this year, 2-hundred-and-36 have gone to Brazilians.

Between 2012 and 2014, Guyana issued just over 2-thousand-3-hundred work permits, with Brazilian workers receiving 2-thousand-1-hundred-and-47 of the total.

Minister Felix says while the David Granger administration intended to accommodate foreign investment, it would not do so at the expense of Guyanese workers.
