Prime Minister Andrew Holness has directed that steps be immediately taken to activate the National Emergency Operation Center as the Tropical System is bearing down on the island.
Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid says Prime Minister Holness authorized the activation of the center following word from the met service that the country is likely to face tropical storm conditions shortly.
Minister Reid hosted a media briefing just after 2 this afternoon.
The briefing was also attended by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie and Director of the Meteorological Service, Evon Thompson.
The Information Minister says the Prime Minister was briefed this afternoon on the Tropical System that is approaching Jamaica.
Senator Reid is appealing to persons to do all they can to safeguard life and property.
He says persons in flood prone areas must be prepared to take quick action.
Senator Reid says it would be wise if all mass events planned for today and tomorrow be postponed.
He says the Tropical System should be taken seriously as its moving closer to Jamaica.
Meanwhile, a bulletin issued by the Met Service says that at approximately 5 this afternoon, which is just about now, it is possible that the tropical system would be upgraded to a Tropical Storm.
The Met Service Director is Evon Thompson.
Mr. Thompson says by tonight, the country is expected to begin feeling the impact of the system, which is expected to be called Tropical Storm Earl.
He says the system is moving unusually fast.
As the country braces for Earl, small craft operators including fishers from the cays and banks began arriving ashore earlier this afternoon.
The Met Service is expected to issue an update sometime between five and six this afternoon.
