Human Rights Activist, Yvonne McCalla Sobers, is concerned about possible human rights breaches stemming from a proposed watchlist for dons.

The idea was again put forward by Prime Minister Andrew Holness as he addressed rank and file members of the police force last week.

During his contribution to the 2018/19 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Holness said research was being undertaken to guide the establishment of a watch list. But, Ms. McCalla Sobers is questioning the need for such a list, pointing to what she describes as the lack of effectiveness of similar legislation.

Ms. McCalla Sobers says Prime Minister Holness needs to ensure that laws aren’t enacted that conflict with the country’s Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.

Meanwhile, Ms. McCalla Sobers says watching for criminal conduct should form part of normal policing.
