INDECOM Wants Citizens To Send Them Reports of Police Violations Via Whatsapp

Commissioner of the Independent Commission of Investigation, Terrence Williams, is urging people to report information to the oversight body using social media, particularly Whatsapp.

Commissioner Williams says although reporting videos, tips or other critical information, may not be permissible in court, these reports can be investigative leads.

He was speaking at a media conference at INDECOM’s headquarters yesterday.

Mr. Williams says people can now contact INDECOM’s 24-hour Control Room System via call or WhatsApp at 876-655-3555.

Mr. Williams’ pronouncement came on the same day a policeman, who allegedly admitted in a voicenote to murdering his wife in St. Mary, was denied bail.

Corporal Kirk Lawrence,is accused of the fatal shooting of his wife three weeks ago.

When he appeared in the St. Mary Parish Court yesterday the Clerk of Court and attorneys representing INDECOM, objected to bail because of a voicenote in which it’s alleged the lawman admitted to killing his wife.

According to Corporal Lawrence’s Attorney, Oswest Senior Smith, the prosecution characterised the lawman as a flight risk.

The prosecution also said Corporal Lawrence was possibly suicidal based on an interpretation of words attributed to him on the voicenote.

Mr. Senior Smith says the court expressed concern about the number of bullet wounds found on the victim.

He says the court also expressed concerns that there was no weapon found on the deceased, who was a license firearm holder.

Corporal Lawrence will reappear in court on July 11.
