JDF Establishes Permanent Battallion in St James

Crime-fighters in several police divisions across western parishes can now call upon a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) battalion permanently based in St. James for assistance.

The revelation was made last evening by National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, as he addressed a community forum in Norwood, St. James.

Dr Chang sought to assure the residents their safety would not be compromised when the State of Public Emergency in the parish expires.

The special security measure in St James will come to an end on January 31.

The National Security Minister says the new JDF base should increase the efficiency of the military’s response time. He says the new base will also serve as a cost-saving measure as the soldiers will have permanent housing when they’re away from Up Park Camp.

Dr. Chang says although the security forces will lose special powers when the State of Public Emergency comes to an end, the parish will not be left under-policed.
