Thirty people who were trapped inside their houses in Sunny Side, Linstead in St. Catherine for several hours this morning due to rising waters have been rescued.
The community is close to the overflowing Rio Cobre.
The Jamaica Defence Force, the Fire Brigade and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, ODPEM participated in the rescue operation.
Director General of ODPEM, Major Clive Davis, says inflatable boats were used to bring the residents to safety.
He says the residents chose to stay with relatives instead of seeking accommodation at the two available shelters in the community.
Major Clive Davis says a disaster assessment will be conducted to determine what further assistance can be provided to the residents.
