The Jamaica Environment Trust, JET, has made a u-turn on government’s move to convert old tyres at the Riverton City dump to energy.
The Trust had previously raised concerns that the process could negatively affect the environment.
It has changed its stance.
Chief Executive Officer of JET, Suzanne Stanley says after hearing from National Environment Planning Agency,NEPA, Caribbean Cement Company and the Prime Minister, she believes there should be no pollution concerns.
Ms. Stanley says she’ll still be following up with NEPA to get more details about how the impacts are to be mitigated.
She says calls will also be made to Carib Cement to get a better understanding of their kiln.
She says there is a forty day phase to test the system.
