Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says all criminal offenses should be on the list of crimes that can be expunged.
Currently, only some offenses, such as those that have a sentence of below five years, can be expunged. But Minister Chuck says he wants to widen that to also include some murder offenses.
The Justice Minister’s comments come as there’s outrage over Opposition Spokesperson on Energy, Phillip Paulwell’s demand for Prime Minister Andrew Holness to fire Managing Director of the National Energy Solutions Limited, NESOL, Carolyn Warren.
Mr. Paulwell says Mrs. Warren was not fit for the post based on confirmation that she was convicted in relation to Trafficking in Narcotics, years ago.
Mrs. Warren has applied to have her criminal record expunged. But Mr. Chuck says that conviction is not included on the list of offenses that can be expunged.
Mrs. Warren told Nationwide News this morning that she’s put her past mistake behind her and has since followed the law religiously.
Minister Chuck says the government is promoting a justice system based on forgiveness.
