Lawyer for Man Accused of Killing Bloomfield Insists NO Political Motive

The Attorney for the man accused of murdering then sitting East Portland MP, the PNP’s Dr. Lynvale Bloomfield, says his client and his family’s security has been compromised due to a suggestion made recently on the political platform that Dr. Bloomfield’s killing may have been politically motivated.

The accused man, 21-year-old Simeon Sutherland, made his first appearance in Court today in connection with Dr. Bloomfield’s murder.
Sutherland’s Attorney, Peter Champagnie, told the Portland Parish Court that Sutherland and his family are in fear following remarks made recently on the political platform.

Mr. Champagnie told the Court that he wishes to make it clear that the death of the deceased was not politically motivated. The prominent Attorney urged people attempting to link politics to Dr. Bloomfield’s killing not to do so because such a suggestion is untruthful.

Last Sunday, Opposition MP, Dr. Dayton Campbell raised eyebrows, when he suggested at a PNP meeting in Port Antonio that people interested in taking over Dr. Bloomfield’s seat murdered the MP. Campbell has since withdrawn his remarks and said he regrets that they’ve been misinterpreted.

In the meantime, Mr. Champagnie also made an application in Court today for the case involving Sutherland to be transferred to Kingston. Sutherland was ordered to return to Court on March 21. On that date the application for the case to be transferred to the Corporate Area will be discussed.

Mr. Champagnie told the Court he’s already in dialogue with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in connection with the case. The Defence Attorney also told the court that based on the contents of his client’s caution statement, Sutherland – “could be a suitable candidate for certain things” – end of quote

Mr. Champagnie also commented that in light of recent legislation, his client could be a beneficiary. Sutherland was charged last Friday with murder of Dr. Bloomfield. He was charged by Police investigators from the Major Investigation Division, MID, in St. Andrew after scientific evidence, telephonic conversations and statements he gave to the Police connected him to the crime scene.

The accused has reportedly given statements to the police and indicated that he had a close friendship with Dr. Bloomfield. It’s understood the Police are also interested in speaking to two other close associates of Dr. Bloomfield who’ve also been linked to the crime scene.

Dr. Bloomfield’s nude body was found at his house in Passley Gardens, Portland last month. The 59-year-old MP and Medical Doctor was stabbed approximately 20-times.
