LGBT Issues not High on Education Agenda

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says matters concerning the well being of students who identify with the LGBT community, are not high on his Ministry’s agenda at this time.

His comments come in the wake of a furore over whether Guidance Counsellors are discriminating against such students by refusing to help them resolve certain problems.

Speaking at a press conference at the Oxford Road office of the HEART Trust NTA last week, Minister Thwaites says there are other more important things on which his team is focused.

The furore was sparked by a comment from the President of the Jamaican Association of Guidance Counsellors, Norma Dixon, who said some some of her members were uncomfortable dealing with students who identify with the LGBT community.

The Jamaican Forum for Lesbians All Sexuals and Gays, J-FLAG, has asked the Education Ministry to probe the matter.

Minister Thwaites says a formal investigation is not necessary.
