The North West St. Andrew by-election will be held on March 5 – one month from today.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the announcement during a JLP Area Council 1 meeting last evening. Nomination day is set for February 12.
Economic Affairs Ambassador, the JLP’s Dr. Nigel Clarke and Educator, the PNP’s, Keisha Hayle are the candidates who’re expected to contest the by-election on March 5.
Prime Minister Holness urged JLP supporters to ensure victory for Dr. Clarke.
The meeting took place at the Pembroke Hall Community Center in St. Andrew last evening.
A number of JLP heavyweights – including Dr. Horace Chang, Dr. Andrew Wheatley and Desmond McKenzie were in attendance.
The by-election was called following the resignation last month of veteran JLP MP, Derrick Smith.
Meanwhile, Dr. Clarke told his JLP colleagues that he’s grateful for their support.
He says his core philosophy involves improving the lives of the people.
And, Councilor for the Chancery Hall Division, Duane Smith, also addressed the JLP Area Council 1 meeting.
Councilor Smith is the son of former MP for the constituency, Derrick Smith. He had expressed an interest in succeeding his father as MP for the area. But the JLP selection and standing committees chose Dr. Clarke as the man to contest the by-election.
Councilor Smith admitted that he’s hurt. However, he pledged his full support for Dr. Clarke.
