McKenzie Appeals to Merchants to Open for Emergency Purchases

Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie is urging business to open their doors this evening to allow for emergency storm preparations.

The Minister was speaking at an emergency press conference this afternoon at the Office of the Prime Minister.

He’s also urging those in flood prone areas not to wait for the worst and begin evacuations when called to do so.

Minister Mckenzie says arrangements will be made to get residents out of these communities.

He says the National Water Commission, NWC, will dispatch water trucks to key areas and all hospitals and major facilities have been issued stand by generators.

Minister McKenzie says the security forces and the Jamaica Fire Brigade have also been activated.

He says that at this point, the Government can consider all preparations well in advance for the upcoming storm.

Meanwhile, Minister McKenzie says he’s comfortable with the arrangements made for the cleaning of drains for the hurricane season.

He says based on support provided so far, no Parish Council can use the excuse of lacking funding to clean drains.
