State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Alando Terrelonge says the Ministry will be rolling out a mental health curriculum for schools.
He says the measure is needed urgently and will be introduced in the upcoming school year.
He admits there aren’t enough trained professionals locally to address the number of students who are trying to cope with mental health issues.
The Junior Minister says far more Jamaican children are suffering from mental health illnesses than the initially reported 46-thousand.
He says Jamaica must act now.
Mr. Terrelonge says some parents fail to get help for their children who’re diagnosed with mental health illnesses for various reasons, including the cost and stigma.
In the meantime, the State Minister says more boys are struggling with suicidal thoughts than girls.
