National Disasters Costing Jamaica 5% of GDP

Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, ODPEM, Major Clive Davis, says the country loses five percent of its Gross Domestic Product annually from the effects of weather systems.

Major Davis says parishes need to be self-sufficient so they don’t always have to rely on ODPEM.

He says ODPEM would like to get more early warnings from Parish Disaster Coordinators when there are potential threats in their areas.

He says although there are financial provisions, certain natural disasters can wipe them out entirely.

Major Clive Davis was speaking Thursday at a special meeting of the municipal corporations at the Hyatt Ziva Hotel in St. James.

The meeting discussed the general state of readiness of the municipal corporations islandwide for the hurricane season.
