NBA Won’t Apologize To China Over Hong Kong Tweet Row

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, says the professional basketball league are not apologising to China for comments made by the general manager of the Houston Rockets, Daryl Morey.

On Friday, Morey tweeted, ‘Fight for freedom, Stand with Hong Kong’ amidst Hong Kong’s fight for democratic independence from China.

Since the tweet, China’s state broadcaster Tencent has suspended the broadcast of NBA pre-season games.

Those include the ones being played in China.

But Commissioner Silver says Morey was expressing his freedom of speech.

Since Silver’s comments today, Chinese state media has said they’re dissatisfied with the comments.

Their CCTV says any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of free speech.
