NEPA Serves Enforcement Notices

The National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, has served enforcement notices on the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the National Land Agency, NLA.

This, after investigation revealed inappropriate solid waste management practices at Pedro Cays.

The notices were served on the Commissioner of Lands in the NLA and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dionne Jennings, on Wednesday.

The Ministry and the Agency have 30 days to rectify the problem.

NEPA says they’ve failed to deal with the containment, treatment and disposal of human excreta at Pedro Cays.

NEPA says the enforcement actions were imposed after the agencies failed to respond and comply with requirements outlined in a letter dated November 26, 2014.

The Pedro Bank is one of the largest offshore banks in the Caribbean basin.

It supports a variety of marine habitats including coral reefs, deep reefs, seagrass beds and four coral islands collectively called the Pedro Cays.
