Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has outlined new regulations to govern and monitor the operations at funeral homes and mortuaries across the country.
Speaking at the annual Funereal Directors brunch in Kingston on Tuesday, Dr. Ferguson says its important that a standard, in the form of legislation, is set to guide the licensing of personnel and institutions.
Dr. Tufton says the industry is currently self-regulated which can lead to several issues.
He says with well over two hundred funeral homes in the country, there will be shortfalls in industry and public health standards without proper regulations.
He’s asked funeral operators to prepare for the changes, as Cabinet reviews the regulations for approval.
The Ministry of Health also created guidelines for the operation of funeral establishments and mortuaries in August 2014.
