New Study Paints Picture of Chronic Illiteracy in Correctional Facilities

Seventy-percent of inmates in adult correctional facilities are illiterate at the point of entry.

That’s according to a study conducted by the Department of Correctional Services.

Harold Bennett is the Education Coordinator in the Department. Mr. Bennett says the percentage of inmates who’re considered to be literate at the basic level is even more dire.

Mr. Bennett says the study was conducted in recent years.

Mr. Bennett says the findings of the study are troubling. But, he says there’s some hope.
