Some 8,500 mortgages will be delivered to new homeowners by the National Housing Trust, NHT, this fiscal year.
That’s according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness who made the disclosure while speaking at the JLP’s 74th annual conference at the National arena in Kingston yesterday.
The Prime Minister also disclosed that over 5,000 housing starts would be completed this fiscal year by the NHT.
Mr. Holness says by 2020 he’s expecting up to 15-thousand new housing starts.
The government plans to sustain this through partnerships with the private sector to deliver affordable housing to Jamaicans.
Meanwhile, Mr. Holness criticised his Opposition counterpart’s establishment of a National Land Access Commission.
In April this year, The Dr. Peter Phillips-led People’s National Party established a commission aimed at addressing squatting and facilitating legal land ownership.
Mr. Holness says there doesn’t need to be a Commission to address the issue of squatting.
