CEO of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, PSOJ, Dennis Chung, says he’s opposed to suggestions that Jamaica implement a staircase structure for income tax.
The recommendation was made in a paper by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding, published by the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Institute yesterday.
Mr. Golding proposed different rates of income tax, which gradually increase the more money a person earns.
But Mr. Chung says this has been attempted in Jamaica before, and has been unsuccessful.
Mr. Chung is reiterating the PSOJ’s stance that the government should move away from income tax, and instead increase consumption taxes such as the GCT.
The PSOJ’s Private Sector Working Group on Tax Reform made the recommendation in a submission to Parliament in 2012.
