No Summer Holiday Entitlement for Local Govt

Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, says local authorities are not entitled to a summer recess.

Mr. McKenzie was responding to a letter from the Association of Local Government Authorities, ALGA.

In the letter ALGA argued that not having a recess in the month of August is setting precedent for the practice to continue.

Minister McKenzie says ALGA has not sufficiently familiarized itself with the legislative framework within which it exists.

He says under the Local Government Act, there’s no provision for any form of recess, to be taken in August, or any other month of the year.
