A Private Member’s motion has been tabled in the House of Representatives to rename the Port Antonio Square, in the parish of Portland in honour of Jamaica’s only national heroine, Nanny of the Maroons.
The motion was put forward by East Portland MP, Dr. Lynvale Bloomfield.
The Right Excellent Nanny was a leader of the Maroons at the beginning of the 18th century. She was deemed pivotal in the fierce fight with the British, during the First Maroon War from 1720 to 1739.
Dr. Bloomfield has also called for a new historic trail to be named in Nanny’s honour.
