Director of Elections, Orrette Fisher has resigned.
Sources close to the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, ECJ, say Mr. Fisher’s resignation is to take effect this week. It’s understood Mr. Fisher sent a letter today to staff members at the Electoral Office of Jamaica, EOJ, indicating he had tendered his resignation. It’s being reported that Fisher, in his letter, said there’s growing political interference at the EOJ.
It’s understood the ECJ has called its Commissioners to a meeting to discuss Mr. Fisher’s resignation. That meeting is to take place on Friday morning. When contacted Wednesday, ECJ, Chairman Dorothy Pyne McLarty declined to confirm or deny that Mr. Fisher has resigned.
Several calls placed this afternoon to Mr. Fisher were not answered.
Mr. Fisher recently took the ECJ to Court in a bid to have his contract extended. There’s been no judgement in the case.
Mr. Fisher’s Attorney, Hugh Wildman, told our news center he’s not aware his client has resigned as Director of Elections.
Efforts on Wednesday afternoon to get a comment from Mr. Fisher were unsuccessful.
