The President of the People’s National Party, PNP, Dr Peter Phillips, is refusing to dismiss the possibility of him being challenged by Central Manchester Member of Parliament, Peter Bunting, for the leadership of the party.

Sources say a high-level meeting was convened early this week between Dr. Phillips and Mr Bunting, amid growing speculation in the PNP that Bunting is getting ready to challenge Phillips for the presidency of the 81-year old political organization.

Allies of Dr. Phillips told our news centre on the weekend that the Opposition Leader intended to use the meeting to offer Mr. Bunting the role of Campaign Director for the next General Elections, which are constitutionally due in 2021.

Dr. Phillips’ supporters say if Mr. Bunting declined the role, the PNP president could advise the next meeting of the party’s powerful National Executive Council, NEC, that he’s in a battle for the leadership.

Nationwide News spoke with Dr Phillips yesterday. He confirmed the meeting with Mr. Bunting but wouldn’t deny the possibility of a leadership challenge.
