Phillips Wary of Budget Cuts

Opposition Spokesman of Finance, Dr. Peter Phillips, says the Government could be compromising the delivery of critical services to the nation based on it’s current estimates of expenditure for the 2016 to 2017 fiscal year.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw tabled the 2016-2017 Estimates of Expenditure in Parliament yesterday.

The $580-billion budget is almost 10-percent lower than the one tabled last year by the previous PNP administration.

It is also approximately 28-percent lower than the supplementary budget tabled recently by the former administration.

Dr. Phillips says based on his initial look at the budget there are some questionable reductions in the funding of critical areas such as the police force.
