Two PNP Councillors have reportedly expressed interest in succeeding Portia Simpson Miller as Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew.
They’re Councillor for the Norman Gardens Division in East Kingston and Minority Leader in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, Angela Brown Burke.
And Councillor for the Payne Land Division in South West St. Andrew, Audrey Facey-Smith.
Mrs. Brown Burke has reportedly been moving to shore up support in the constituency. Efforts to contact her this afternoon were unsuccessful.
It’s understood that some members of the PNP Region Three are trying to have Mrs. Brown Burke selected as Simpson Miller’s successor without a contest.
But sources at a recent meeting of the PNP’s National Executive Council, NEC, say Councillor Facey-Smith told Mrs. Brown Burke that she’d not get the seat without a contest.
It’s understood the PNP Vice President has also met resistance from some constituents and also influential members of the party’s executive.
Councillor Facey-Smith told our news center this afternoon that she’ll not comment publicly on whether she’ll be entering the contest until she has a discussion with Mrs. Simpson Miller.
Audrey Facey-Smith, Councillor for the Payne Land Division in South West St. Andrew. Mrs. Simpson Miller’s resignation as MP is to become effective on June 29.
South West St. Andrew is a PNP garrison which is considered the party’s safest seat in the country.
