The Lisa Hanna-led PNP Region 1 is ending its push for PNP General Secretary, Paul Burke, to resign immediately.
In April, a motion calling for the resignation of Mr. Burke was moved by Miss Hanna during a meeting of the PNP’s National Executive Council, NEC.
Nationwide News understands that a separate motion was moved during a meeting of PNP Region 1 Management Committee yesterday calling for the push against Burke to be abandoned.
According to the motion, the move to withdraw the motion for Burke’s resignation follows Region 1’s evaluation of the Appraisal Committee Report on the PNP’s election loss.
According to the motion – Region 1 endorses the findings and recommendations of the Julian Robinson led-committee. The motion says the need for collective responsibility for the election loss is recognized.
According to the motion – instead of calling for Burke to step down immediately the PNP should focus on acting on recommendations by Mr. Robinson’s appraisal committee. The motion was moved yesterday by PNP NEC member Richard Lake and seconded by Dr. Dayton Campbell.
Burke has reportedly told the PNP in writing that he’ll step down as General Secretary in September. He’s expected to be replaced by Julian Robinson.
Yesterday, Mr. Robinson told a media briefing that the PNP’s NEC, is to consider the report by his committee.
The report noted that the decision of the PNP Campaign Committee not to participate in national pre-election debates was fatal.
Robinson was asked yesterday why the PNP top brass did not appreciate the importance of the debating despite widespread outcry against its decision.
Robinson also told the media briefing that the PNP’s push for a second term was hurt by a parallel campaign orchestrated by factions within the party.
Mr. Robinson declined to confirm or deny whether during his committee’s evaluation of reasons for the election loss – some comrades complained that PNP Region 3 Chairman Phillip Paulwell coordinated a separate campaign outside of the main activities of the Peter Phillips-led campaign committee.
Meanwhile, the MP for North West St. Ann, Dr. Dayton Campbell, says the decision to withdraw the motion was the right thing to do.
He says the initial motion was based on emotions.
And former Government MP, Damion Crawford, has reacted with dismay to the move by the Lisa Hanna-led PNP Region 1 to withdraw the motion calling for the immediate resignation of Paul Burke.
Writing on twitter this afternoon – Mr. Crawford commented “I just heard the motion to remove Paul Burke has been withdrawn & immediately remembered the book animal farm – Jah Know Lisa.”
Crawford then took another jab at Hanna and commented – “anyhow it seems the renewal needs a renewal”.
