The police say they’re actively targeting men in Portmore St. Catherine, who are posing as taxi operators, to abduct and rape women.
This comes as the police in Portmore are reportedly recording incidents of rape in the municipality on a daily basis.
These include cases of rape allegedly being committed by drivers of illegal or robot taxis.
Head of the Traffic Police, Senior Superintendent Calvin Allen, says the police have arrested several rape suspects recently.
He says some areas in St. Catherine are ‘hot spots’ for abducting and raping female passengers.
He’s urging members of the public to be more vigilant about using illegal taxis for transportation.
A Jamaica Observer newspaper report today tells the story of a woman being tied up and raped at knifepoint by an illegal taxi operator in Portmore.
The story also reports that the Portmore Police are getting reports of rapes on a daily basis.
In February, Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, announced a zero-tolerance approach to illegal taxis and those who bear tinted glasses.
That was in response to reports of the abduction of women and children — some of whom used illegal taxis.
