The Acting Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, says the municipality is having funding challenges as it moves to destroy mosquito breeding sites in anticipation of Zika spreading to Jamaica.

Mr Thomas says the Portmore Municipal Council has had to find creative ways to carry out its clean up operation which began at the start of this month.

Mr. Thomas says the Council has already led clean-up operations in several Portmore communities.

He says he’s waiting on the Health Department to begin fogging and oiling of water deposits.

Mr. Thomas says Jamaica’s experience with Chik-V has emphasized the importance of proactive action against mosquito breeding sites.
