Opposition Spokesperson on Tourism, Shahine Robinson, is renewing calls for the government to protect brand Jamaica in the face of increasing competition from Cuba.
During a recent visit to Havana, US Secretary of State John Kerry, announced that since January this year, travel from the US to Cuba had increased by 35 percent and is set to surge even higher.
Over the same period, Jamaica recorded a 9-percent increase in stop over arrivals from the United States.
Cuba has already begun enjoying monthly double digit increases in stop over visitors, with the figure for May being especially eye catching at 20-percent.
The US will also be investing heavily in Cuba in areas such as business enterprise and telecommunications.
Mrs. Robinson says the government must work to ensure that potential tourists will continue to have a reason to choose destination Jamaica.
