Questions are being raised about plans to pursue a 1000 megawatt coal fired plant for electricity generation at AlPart in South St. Elizabeth.
Energy Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley in his presentation today was adamant that the coal generating plant would be relatively clean.
Dr. Wheatley says he awaits a final report from the National Environment Planning Agency on similar coal plants operating in China. But environmentalist Peter Espeut is fuming.
Mr. Espeut argues that there’s no such thing as clean coal.
He says revitalizing the bauxite industry may not be worth the risk to the environment.
