Real Estate Developer Taken into Custody in Connection with Messado Fraud Case

Nationwide News understands that real estate agent and corporate developer Beverly Barrakat has been taken into custody in connection with the intensifying police investigation into a fraud case against the prominent lawyer, Jennifer Messado.

It’s understood Barrakat was arrested last evening by the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch, CTOC.

Meanwhile, in a tweet, the Jamaica Constabulary Force confirmed the arrest of a real estate agent in relation to the fraud case involving Messado.

Messado is to appear in Court tomorrow to answer to fraud charges. The real estate lawyer was arrested on Friday by CTOC. She’s been charged with four counts of Forgery, two counts of Uttering Forged documents, Conspiracy to Defraud, Causing money to be paid out by forged document and Money Laundering.

According to investigators, on December 20, 2017, the accused prepared an Agreement of Sales for two parcels of land without the knowledge and consent of the owner.

It’s alleged that Messado forged the signature of the trustee, stamp and letterhead of the owner of the properties to facilitate the fictitious transaction and collected USD$270,000 as down payment from the prospective purchaser.

These properties were put to sale for JMD$232-million or USD1.8-million.

Ms. Messado remains in police custody.
