Workers at the Alpart bauxite plant in St. Elizabeth are at this hour protesting the move by JISCO to issue redundancy letters to several of them.

The plant has been closed for upgrades.

During the upgrades, some staff members would be retained. However, several others face being made redundant.

Nationwide understands some 800 workers were issued with redundancy notice letters today.

General Secretary at the National Workers Union, Granville Valentine says they’re concerned Chinese nationals will replace the Jamaican employees.

He says a meeting must be held before any redundancy exercise takes place.
