Relief Coming for Drought-Stricken Parishes

Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, says relief is coming for people in parishes affected by drought conditions.

Minister McKenzie says the three month period from July to September will have higher than normal temperatures with below average rainfall.

The five parishes most affected by drought conditions St. Elizabeth, Clarendon, St. Catherine, Portland and sections of St. Mary will get financial assistance.

Minister McKenzie says the government is prepared to spend more money in food-producing parishes like Manchester to ensure adequate water is available.

He says the government will also be spending $50-million on clean-up plans in sections of the island prone to flooding during the rainy season.
