On Tuesday the Portia Simpson Miller Foundation awarded some 42 tertiary students educational grants, bursaries and scholarships at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston.
The Foundation in its eight years received new support in the form of 5 new scholarships from private partners to include the Christopher Issa Scholarship and the Dr Cherise Francis Nursing Scholarship.
Patron of the Foundation and Former Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller says supporting the education of the poor is one way to ensure the cycle of poverty is broken.
Mrs Simpson Miller who championed the cause of the poor during her tenure as leader of the People’s National Party reiterated the need for the awardees to give back to society even as they receive.
Mrs Simpson Miller was her usual affable self; kissing and hugging and running to meet and greet partners and friends.
Meanwhile she reiterates that the Foundation doesn’t give awards based on politics, colour or gender.
