Sugar Cess Update

The Ministry of Agriculture says it’s hopeful of reaching an agreement with players in the manufacturing sector over the proposed cess on imported refined sugar.

In April the government announced that it would be imposing the cess in order to help fund the transformation of the agricultural sector.

The announcement was met with strong opposition by private sector interests.

Permanent Secretary in the Agriculture Ministry, Donovan Stanberry says a decision will be announced by the end of the month.
