Tech Minister Urges Jamaicans to Protect themselves from Ransomware

Technology Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, says Jamaica has been unaffected so far by a major cyber threat that has brought down critical government services in over a hundred countries.

The ransomware known as “WannaCry” exploits a Microsoft Windows security vulnerability.

It blocks users from accessing their files unless a ransom is paid in the virtual currency Bitcoin.

The cost of the ransom is 300-hundred US dollars which doubles every three days that it isn’t paid over to the hackers.

Reports say over two-hundred thousand computers have been affected world wide.

Dr. Wheatley is urging Jamaicans to immediately install the latest Microsoft security updates on their computers.

Ransomware has become an increasing cyber security threat world wide in recent years.

Dr. Andrew Wheatley, says he expects a further report on the threat later today from the Cyber Emergency Response Team, CERT.
